2 The View Welcome message from our Headteacher As we approach the end of the Autumn term, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the energy and enthusiasm our pupils have brought to all aspects of school life. A warm welcome once again to the new families and pupils who joined us this term – it’s been a pleasure to see you settling in so well. This term has been filled with memorable moments. Our Harvest Festival was a wonderful celebration of music and art, showcasing the children’s creativity and the hard work they put into their performance. In November, we thoroughly enjoyed taking part in Children in Need. It was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to come together, have fun, and raise money for a great cause – always a highlight of the school year! The excitement of Christmas has well and truly been in the air. We’ve had preparations for our nativity performance in the last fewweeks and at the time of writing, we look forward to what promises to be a magical event, celebrating the talents of our amazing children. I’d also like to thank you for supporting good attendance. Every school day is important, and it’s inspiring to see so many pupils engaged in their learning and making fantastic progress. Finally, a big thank you to Lia Shorrocks for creating this beautiful newsletter. I hope you enjoy reading it and reflecting on the achievements of the term. Here’s to a joyful and successful new year. Mrs Liz Wynne
We have had a wonderful start to the new term. It’s been a pleasure to see plenty of smiling faces arriving in the morning, throughout the day in the classroom and on the playground. Your feedback… Soaring to success We asked some of our parents and children what they think about Acre View, and the impact we are having on them. Here’s what they had to say… “Harry really seems to be enjoying school and tells us lots about it and is happy to go in everyday. Communication with school is great and being able to message the teacher via an app helps as I’m able to talk to Harry about his day.” Harry’s Mum “Blake has settled really well into life at Acre View Primary School. He goes through the gates with no resistance and waves us off when we leave. He seems so much happier.” Blake’s parents “Bodhi has settled in beautifully. I have never, in Bodhi’s 5+ years, seen him so happy to be picked up for school. As soon as he sees his school jumper in the morning, a big smile appears on his face.” Bodhi’s Mum “Reuben has settled in beautifully. He is excited to come to school, he is much calmer and happier in himself. He is happy to talk about school which is a first as this would have made him upset previously. I feel he is making amazing progress at AVPS. I don’t think there is anything holding him back.”Reuben’s Mum 3 What our children think... “I guess I’ve found the perfect school for me!” Mark, Eagle Class “I like playing out with my friends” Demi-Leigh, Eagle Class “I love the bikes!” Harry, Owl Class
Charity event... Autumn feelings! This term we had the pleasure of hosting our first ever Harvest Festival. One of our new School Governors came along to join in with the festivities and the children from all our classes made sure they had a wonderful Acre Viewwelcome! Eagle class had prepared a song with actions for everyone to enjoy and join in with. We had dancing and lots of smiles, with a special round of applause for Mr Forbes’ dance moves! Wren and Robin spent the week preparing their vegetable collage pictures. Each class learnt all about harvest and the seasonal vegetables it brings. A pumpkin is not just for Halloween, as Wren class found out. Whole School Events... Pupils showcasing their beautiful artwork Own clothes day for Children in Need. On Friday 15th November, Acre View came dressed to impress in our own clothes, to raise money for Children In Need. Thanks to the generosity of the parents and staff, we raised £50 for the charity. The children enjoyed Pudsey Bear themed activities throughout the day and had lots of fun wearing their Spotty Bear ears (So did the staff!). The hall was decorated with class made spots and bears especially for the occasion, which brought a smile to everyone’s face. Thank you to everyone who took part and made our first own clothes day a success. 4 Fun and dancing at the Harvest Festival
The Acre View Primary School Newsletter Time to celebrate... Be Kind, Be Brave, Be Curious. At the end of each week, our classes have been celebrating their awards and achievements in Friday Rewards Assembly. Led by Mrs Wynne, Headteacher, we gather together in the hall to showcase children’s positive behaviour from that week. This termwe have seen children receive certificates for displaying our school values, such as • Being Kind to other children in their class and helping their teachers around the school. • Being Brave while getting their flu vaccination and showing courage after moving to our school. • Being Curious by building small world houses for the bugs around the school and by conducting experiments in their science lessons. Well done to everyone who has been awarded a certificate and to all the children who attend the assemblies. 5 Literacy... Focus on phonics with Ms Goodwin At Acre View Primary School we are embarking on a phonics adventure with Read Write Inc. We want to offer your child the best possible start to becoming independent readers. Children who read, or who are read to regularly, have the opportunity to open doors to so many different worlds. More importantly, reading will give your child the tools to become independent life-long learners. We can achieve this together through: Read Write Inc, a program to help your child to read at school Encouraging children to develop a love of books by reading to them daily, at home and at school Giving children access to a wide range of books at school and at home Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics based English programme which helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. The programme is designed for children aged 4-7. However some children will need to access this programme beyond the age of 7 to meet individual needs.
Wren... Starling... This term, our topic was ‘Happy to Be Me’. In Wren class, we have been getting to know our new school environment, looking at photographs of our families, getting used to our daily routine and thinking about what is special about each and every one of us. We read books that helped us with this learning; Elmer, The Colour Monster and different books about our body. We had such a beautiful half term, with lots of lovely learning taking place. My favourite moment from this term has been watching our children in the celebration assemblies each Friday. This is such a lovely time to come together as a school, and watching how beautifully theWren class children sit and celebrate all of our achievements has been a really proud moment. Miss Jones’ favourite moment of the term was seeing our lovely children get to know our morning routine. We come together each morning to complete ourWake up Shake up and then sing our Makaton Good Morning song. The children have done so well joining in as a class. Ms Goodwin We have had a busy start to our new term at Acre View Primary School, with the children settling in beautifully, and Being Kind, Being Brave, Being Curious every day. Here are some of the activities our classes have been getting up to... What a wonderful start to a new school for Starling class! We began the school year welcoming our new class members, sharing photographs and stories about our friends and families, interests, ambitions and aspirations for the year ahead. Such a lovely way to build a sense of community and help encourage self-expression. Starlings expressed themselves, celebrating their individuality by creating wonderful self-portraits that brighten up the classroom. During September and October Starlings were busy exploring the wooded outside area. They collected a variety of bugs from around the garden documenting their findings in some wonderful artwork. Robin... Eagle... Since September, we have been very busy in Robin class; making new friends and settling into our new school. Our Learning Means The World topic has been ‘Happy to Be Me’ and the children have enjoyed getting to know each other’s likes and dislikes. We created self-portraits and made some ‘smelly paintings’ – though cinnamon wasn’t the most popular scent! We have read a new story, The Something by Rebecca Cobb. Robins loved listening to the story song before attempting to retell the story themselves. My favourite part of our week this term has to be music time on a Thursday morning – the children all get involved and the shared love of nursery rhymes makes it so much fun! However, for Robin class, nothing beats going outside – whatever the weather. Ms Bennett The children have had a brilliant start to their life in Eagle class this term and we couldn’t be prouder of them! Our first Learning Means The World unit took us to the limits of our Solar System as we learned about the geography of our part of the universe, sketching the clouds of Jupiter, exploring the planets and even designing aliens that may inhabit them. Our Maths has been centred around place value - the building blocks of Maths - as we partitioned numbers and rounded up to the nearest 1000. English has been based on the wonderful book The Whale by Etan and Vita Murrow. Children wrote simile poems and descriptive paragraphs of the sea and storms. The Eagle scientists have been exploring forces such as friction, air and water resistance with experiments involving ice, parachutes, boards and bikes! We’ve had a fantastic term. I hope everyone has a lovely break. Mr Forbes FIRE ASSEMBLY POINT ROBIN CLASS FIRE ASSEMBLY POINT KINGFISHER CLASS FIRE ASSEMBLY POINT EAGLE CLASS 7

In Maths, the class have been brilliant with their place value, addition and subtraction tasks. In Science, the class have been working on human and animal skeletons and have learnt a lot. One topic they have particularly enjoyed so far has been stop motion animation and they created lovely cartoon flip books. Mr Storey Welcome to Kingfisher Class! We are thrilled to introduce our new class, Kingfisher, and welcome all the new children joining our school community. This term, our topic is Celebrations, and we took part in an array of planned activities. From exploring different cultural festivities to creating festive crafts, there was something for everyone to enjoy. Our School Nurse, Cassie, is here to help you survive the winter and protect the family this cold and flu season. The Acre View Primary School Newsletter Cassie’s winter tips... What you can do at home if you are ill? If you are ill the best thing you can do to feel better is: • Rest and keep warm • Drink lots of liquids • Have at least one hot meal each day • Take paracetamol if needed Washing your hands with soap and water is one of the easiest ways to not get illnesses like flu and coronavirus. Wash your hands for 20 seconds more often, especially when you: • Get home or into work • Blow your nose, sneeze or cough • Eat or touch food Your local pharmacist can help with minor illnesses like colds. They have been trained to understand everything from colds to more serious illnesses. If you cannot get to a pharmacy, you can phone them or ask someone to go for you. Phone NHS 111 for fast advice on illnesses. You can do this any time of night or day and any day of the year. The person on the phone will tell you about services near you. Go to a walk-in centre - These are usually run by nurses. You do not need to book. Stay Safe Everyone. 11 A message fromMr Storey Safeguarding With Christmas only a couple of weeks away, many children will be excitedly opening new consoles, tablets and laptops. However, in the rush to let young children enjoy their new gadgets, many parents forget to set these devices up safely. Here are some tips for a safe online Christmas fromMr Storey, our Designated Safeguarding Lead. Passcodes on iPhones and iPads - Setting parental controls to make it difficult to access inappropriate content and also limit their screen time. Install family settings on Xbox, Playstation and laptops - These settings can monitor the types of games played and also allocate a spending money limit. Stay vigilant - It is important to note that none of these methods are 100% foolproof, so although parental controls will help to keep your child safe online, they work best with good old fashioned parental vigilance.
